Good Evening Park 6 Families, Mask Variance Update: The mask exemption request from the Park County Health Officer was received on Saturday making the wearing of masks in schools optional. We ask that all students, staff, and parents/ guardians be respectful of the choices others make regarding face coverings. Those who want to continue wearing masks are free to do so. Those that do not want to wear masks are free to take them off. Please be respectful of everyone's personal choice. Masks will still need to be worn on school busses due to the Federal mandate for masks to be worn on public transportation. School busses are considered public transportation. Good Afternoon Parents, Guardians, and Community Members, Do you know of a Park 6 Teacher that is constantly going above and beyond? Are they a leader in the school? Do they have a special way of reaching students? Please consider nominating them for the 2022 District Teacher of the Year Award. This is open to all teachers with the district. Once nominated, candidates will be asked to complete an application. Completed applications will be reviewed by a selection committee comprised of a Park 6 administrator, a local business representative, a former teacher of the year recipient, a parent, a school board member, and a local state legislator. The 2022 District Teacher of the Year will be announced in the fall of 2021. Nominations must be received by Wednesday, April 14, 2021. Online nomination form: https://forms.gle/epuMcdBVjZ52Xk1p9
As you know, the State of Wyoming is facing a significant funding deficit that could result in up to a 12% or $3.9M reduction in funding to Park 6. This will have a significant impact on every school districts’ ability to provide the educational “basket of goods and services” in the same manner as we have in the past. Our district leadership has provided recommendations to the Board of Trustees and tough decisions are being made at all levels. Our next step is to consider potential cuts to sports/activities. As a district, we provide students with every athletic opportunity sanctioned by the WHSAA which is remarkable for a district our size. To that end, we are extending an invitation to the community, parents, and students to provide input to the Board the evening of April 12th, from 5:30 - 7:30 pm in the Cody Middle School Commons. A survey will go out to stakeholders after spring break to provide an additional opportunity for input regarding potential cuts to activities. NO decisions regarding cuts to sports/activities will be made until after public input has been received and considered.

The first 100 people will be allowed in for the performance. Doors will open at 6:30 pm. Masks are required at all times. On Thursday, January 9, a CMS student attempted to cross Big Horn Avenue on the way to school. The student was struck by a semi-truck, and by the grace of God, was not seriously injured. Upon arrival at school, the student was treated by the school nurse, and taken for medical treatment by their parent. We are extremely grateful that this student is safe. Park 6 has been working with the City of Cody to seek solutions for pedestrians crossing Big Horn Avenue. The district has identified Big Horn Avenue as a safety hazard and therefore provides bus transportation to students who might otherwise cross Big Horn Avenue by foot or by bike. Park 6 staff, Trustees, City of Cody and the Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) met on this issue on October 13, 2020, and WYDOT failed to offer a viable solution. Big Horn Avenue is a state highway (WY Highway 14) and is therefore under the jurisdiction of the the State. WYDOT's requirements for meeting the pedestrian threshold to include a safe crosswalk is one obstacle, among many, that has prevented us from moving forward with a solution. The District continues to work alongside the City of Cody and WYDOT to seek solutions. We will be meeting with our city partners again next week. Student safety is top priority. We ask parents to encourage their students to ride the bus when a safe route to school is unavailable.

Due to a request from parents, we are providing more detailed information about our COVID19 student cases as of today. Please know that this changes daily! Today we have a total of 69 students out due to COVID, either quarantined or positive. Here is the break down by building: Sunset Elementary = 18 students Livingston Elementary = 10 students Eastside Elementary = 8 students Valley/Wapiti = 0 students CMS = 16 students CHS/HMA = 17 students The predictions for the next couple of weeks is that our numbers will continue to increase. In fact numbers are predicted to increase through January. It is difficult to find anyone who isn't impacted by COVID fatigue. We have to be strong, stay diligent, and hang in there! We can do this for our kids and their teachers! https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/daily-life-coping/going-out
This message is intended to keep parents and community members updated concerning the impact of COVID19 on students and staff in our Park 6 schools. As of this morning, we have 68 students out, either quarantined or isolated, and 12 staff members (7 of whom are teachers). At this time, we are NOT considering any short-term school closures. We are hoping to make it to winter break and beyond, business as usual. Winter sports and activities are in full swing. Please contact the Activities Office if you have questions about requirements/restrictions for attending your student's competitions or performances. 587-6110 The requirement to wear masks at any event is non-negotiable. Compliance with this mandate from the WHSAA will allow our students to continue to perform and compete. Due to our success with our remote learning platform, keeping our students engaged in their classes/classroom instruction is allowing us to continue in a Tier 1 mode (with adjustments). Each of our staff members is essential to the district's operations, from bus drivers and custodians to teachers and support staff. The impact of COVID to our staff members could overcome our ability to keep our doors open. Everything that you do to keep your children well (masks, handwashing, keeping them home if they are sick) helps our staff stay well and continue to come to work. Thank you for your efforts to help us out! It takes a village!

As you know, Park County has enacted a mask mandate through Dec. 4th. While we recognize that that may not be a popular decision, we have been able to keep our schools open because of our mitigation measures which includes wearing masks by staff and students. The District applauds our county officials for taking this step. The Wyoming High School Athletics Association has worked with the WY Dept. of Health to develop guidance for winter sports. That guidance includes a mandate that all spectators wear masks for the duration of the event regardless of social distancing and sitting with family groups. Concession stands will not be open and no food will be allowed in the gyms or other venues. No mask...No entrance to the building! No debate! Spectators' compliance with this mandate will be a determining factor in whether spectators continue to be allowed access to games AND whether winter sports will be able to continue at all. Thank you for your efforts to help keep our schools open and our sports and activities continuing.
Dear Park 6 Parents, We are reaching out to thank you for your diligence in temperature and COVID-19 symptom checks before your students come to school each day! As you know, staff at each school have been double checking temperatures as students come into the building every morning. Beginning Wednesday, Nov. 18th, we will no longer be screening temperatures as students arrive at school because after 11 weeks of school, data from our school nurses does not support our continuing this practice. All but a very few cases have been caught by our nurses when students present with symptoms during the day, rather than a temperature check at the door. So keep up the good work at home as we head into the winter months! We appreciate your support in keeping our schools open!

We are excited to announce that the Cody High School marching band and color guard competed in the 2020 Wyoming State Marching Band Festival on October 17 and received a Superior rating. This year the festival was held virtually with each band submitting a video of their performance. The CHS band and color guard, comprised of over 70 students, braved high winds and low temperatures to record their submission that earned the top score. Six judges evaluated bands from all over Wyoming in the areas of music, marching, percussion, and auxiliary (color guard) and the bands were rated superior, excellent or good. The CHS band is led by Director, Wade French, drum majors Garrett Nelson and Liberty Laing, and drum line instructor Matt Poto. The color guard is directed by Carisa French and Mo Bell.

Parents, staff and students! We continue to work with Park County Public Health as we have more active COVID-19 cases in our student population at CHS. When a positive test result is reported to public health, a local/state public health official will contact the student or their parent to complete an investigation and gather the following information: 1. School, grade, classroom, and activities for student. 2. Symptoms and symptom onset date. 3. Underlying health conditions. 4. Close contacts (within 6 feet and no mask for 15 min. or more). 5. Date of last contact with the person with COVID-19. 6. Any other relevant information to public health. Public Health will order either isolation or quarantine. The school district will NOT make that decision, nor advise students to stay home. Our school nurses will send students home if they come to school with symptoms. Parents, please ensure that you have contacted the building principal if public health has ordered isolation or quarantine of your student. Students will need to be in touch with their teachers for immediate access to remote classes. In order to keep our schools open, we are appealing to all of you to use caution when in crowds (masks and social distancing). Masks and clean hands are critical to our keeping the school buildings open and educating our students in person. This is not an invitation to debate the efficacy of masks. It takes a village! PLEASE HELP US OUT!
From Superintendent Monteith ~ First Positive COVID-19 Case As expected, we had our first positive case of COVID-19. Our partners at Public Health contacted the school immediately and followed up with contact tracing. Within a few hours it was determined that no other students or staff would be required to quarantine. Our implementation of mask wearing and social distancing is working! Thank you to our partners in Public Health! Thank you to students, staff and parents for your support in adhering to our plan! Because of your efforts our schools will stay open!!
Free meals for all children! Yes, you absolutely read that correctly. The school nutrition department, in efforts to make sure food is available to all children, has opted to feed all children for free until Winter Break or until funds run out. In order to make this sustainable we need everyone to fill out a free and reduced form, please. https://family.titank12.com/application/new?identifier=HHCG2A Funding for schools depends on our free and reduced percentage, this happens to be the time of year when we collect and submit this information to the state. This move will have an impact on a la carte sales, they will have to cease. This means we will no longer be able to sell individual milk, extra entrees, and adult meals. I hope you can all view this as a small convenience to give up for the greater good for this short term period. Make sure your student signs up each day during morning attendance to take advantage of these meals. Be sure to watch for updates about curbside pick-ups!

March 13, 2020 Dear Staff, Students, Parents, and Community Members, In response to the ever-changing dynamics regarding the Coronavirus (COVID-19), I would like to update you regarding Park County School District No. 6’s current and proactive plans. Please be assured my office is in constant contact with the local and state health officials who are providing assistance and recommendations of actions to be taken as the status continues to rapidly evolve. This information and all updates will be posted on our district Facebook page and our district website at www.park6.org The District is following the guidance of Governor Mark Gordon, the Wyoming Department of Education, and state and local health authorities. At this time, no districts in Wyoming have closed. We will continue to monitor this issue to ensure that we are taking the proper precautions for our staff, students, and families because their health and safety are our primary concerns. It is essential that parents keep students home from school when they are ill and follow the District’s Sick Day guidelines located on our website. Beginning Monday, March 16, 2020, all nonessential student and staff travel will be postponed until further notice. Bus routes, food services, and inter-school travel will continue as normal. Thank you to those of you who have reached out and expressed your thoughts, concerns, and inquiries regarding our district’s response to COVID-19. I share your concerns and recognize how much remains that is unknown, including the future impact upon the community. I share with you here the guidance our schools are currently following. While it may not provide you with every detail of our ongoing work and planning, it will give you a general understanding of the recommendations that are driving our efforts. Thank you for thoroughly reading and reviewing the contents of this communication. The following summarizes current status and recent action items: Current Status ● Schools will remain in normal operating procedures including transportation and food service. ● School extra-curricular activities will continue to be evaluated. ● Cleaning and disinfecting protocols meet current best practice recommendations. ● Regular communication with Public Health and State Health Departments regarding the COVID-19 impact in Park County. ● Preparing for potential off-site instruction. WHSAA COVID-19 UPDATE The WHSAA Board of Directors, representing the 72 members schools in Wyoming, is issuing the following guidance as we proceed with our school activities. In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, the WHSAA has suspended all extracurricular activities statewide, beginning Monday, March 16th through at least March 28, 2020, with schools having the option to extend the timeline should they choose. The 3A/4A State Basketball Tournament will not take place this year. We understand the tremendous disappointment this decision is for our student athletes, especially our seniors, but please realize that we must be a responsible state organization and that our highest priority is ensuring the safety of our students, schools and communities. Spring sport practices will be allowed at the discretion of each school district. The WHSAA staff will continue to work diligently with the state entities that are experts in this area and follow their guidance as we proceed in determining the best course of action with the remainder of the spring activities. We encourage all our schools to do the same with their local and county experts. We appreciate your patience and support of our students as we work through this complex situation.
