Red Lodge

CMS PE Outdoor Activity Day

The PE department would like to take all students on an outdoor activity day. We will be going to Red Lodge Mountain for students to participate in different activities. The activities students can choose to participate in are downhill skiing, snowboarding, cross country skiing, or snowshoeing.

Learning Objectives

  • Students will improve their physical, social, emotional, and mental health

  • Student will help reduce the risk for anxiety and depression by increasing their heart rate and breathing fresh air

  • Students will learn the skills to be successful with lifelong sports they can participate in for life

  • Students will learn about other recreational activities our community has to offer

  • Students will learn how to appropriately communicate and behave around peers in the public

  • Students will learn skills that will enable them to exhibit appropriate personal and social responsibility

Expectations

  • Every student participating in downhill skiing or snowboarding must wear a helmet. Helmets come with all rentals. If you do not have one to go with your personal equipment, the mountain will provide one for you at no extra charge.

  • All students participating in downhill skiing or snowboarding will be required to go up the Magic Carpet and descend successfully down the bunny hill before they are allowed to advance onto the chairlifts. CMS and Red Lodge staff members will determine if the students are successful.

  • Students will be expected to come to the lodge for lunch. At that time, we ask that all students check in with their PE teacher.

  • Students need to always be with a buddy or friend while downhill skiing, snowboarding, cross country skiing, or snowshoeing. No solo activities.

  • Students participating in Snowshoeing or Cross Country Skiing must go with a CMS staff member. They will stay with that staff member for the duration of the activity.

  • The groups cross country skiing or snowshoeing will leave from the Red Lodge Mountain main lodge and return to the lodge when they are done.

The Cost for the Different Activities:

  • Downhill skiing or Snowboarding - $35 for lift ticket and rentals. This includes rentals and a lift ticket, if you have your own equipment the cost will still be $35. If you have a season pass you can use that instead of paying the $35 fee.

  • Cross country skiing - FREE, but need to have your own skis and boots for this

  • Snowshoeing - FREE, and you may use the middle schools snowshoes for free as well.

  • If you choose not to participate in this wonderful opportunity we will have staff from each grade level stay back at the school so students have an alternate activity for the day.

  • You will be paying Red Lodge Mountain directly the day of your trip.

  • If you need a scholarship for your activity please talk with your PE teacher.

Other information:

  • Each student will need to bring a sack lunch for the day or money to pay for lunch at the lodge. We can also pre-order sack lunches from the school cafeteria. Students that need a cafeteria lunch for their skiing day MUST let their PE teacher know prior to our departure date.

  • Students will need appropriate outdoor clothing (coat, gloves, helmet/hat, snow pants, thick socks). If you don’t have access to these items let your PE teacher know and we will do our best to procure them.

  • We will need parent volunteers. If you are interested in helping out please contact Mrs. Harrison in the CMS office. Parent volunteers that want to partake in the downhill activities will need to pay the $35.00.

  • Departure times will vary because we need staggered lesson times. We will need one bus of 32-50 students leaving at 7am each day we are skiing. If you have a ride to the school at 7am and you are needing a lesson please sign up on the form. The other two buses will depart CMS at approximately 8:00am on their respective ski date. We will return at approximately 3:15pm.

  • If your child needs a rental form, please have him/her see his/her PE teacher.

If you have additional questions, please feel free to contact us.
